Successful plays transcend mere strings of dialogue. Elements such as plot and character are instrumental to the build-up of an engaging play. This class will take you into the depths of playwriting, showing you how to create believable dialogues unburdened by clichés. You will also learn how to build acts that compound into a compelling larger narrative.
There will be suggested readings for the duration of this class as a way to have you study the works of playwrights who have excelled at their craft. The class is open to writers in all stages, and it will be taught by critically-acclaimed playwright Siphiwo Mahala, author of the deeply witty and humorous play The House of Truth.
During the course of this class, there will be writing exercises, which you will be expected to complete and review with other participants. You will also be guided on how to revise your work, identify plot holes and inconsistencies in your play. At the end of this class, you will have the skills and tools required to write a brilliant and an entertaining play.
